Storyline:
In 19th-century China, seven year old girls Snow Flower and Lily are matched as laotong - or "old sames" - bound together for eternity. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by taking turns writing in a secret language, nu shu, between the folds of a white silk fan. In a parallel story in present day Shanghai, the laotong's descendants, Nina and Sophia, struggle to maintain the intimacy of their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives, and a relentlessly evolving Shanghai. Drawing on the lessons of the past, the two modern women must understand the story of their ancestral connection, hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan, or risk losing one another forever.

I liked it, but was luckier than my friend who read the book. She felt more confused than I did. It was very interesting and something I did not know about beforehand. I did know about the foot binding but not laotong.

Somewhat of a different story than the book, but it was a lovely story. Loved the actors who played Lily and Snow Flower. They were like I pictured them in the book. I'm sorry it couldn't get more into some of the core of the book, but the story of lifelong friendships touched my heart.

I liked this film, although I admit it probably wouldn't appeal to the broader film audience here in the U.S. If only more American films were photographed as professionally as this. The whole film, end to end, was shot by a greatly talented artist. Exotic locations are one thing but the photography in this film is simply incredible and is not aided by computer generated effects either. The story lost much in translation from the book but not so much as to change its touching core. The talent is convincing enough to elicit the required audience responses but not much more. While not filled with multi million dollar super hero action or vulgar comedy disguised as wit, this movie delivers a different kind of entertainment. See it. You won't be disappointed.

I was excited to see this film, however, I ended up falling asleep and drifting away through out the film. Though many of the elderly in the theatre (70's & up) liked the movie, I heard their comments walking out , I felt the film was a very, very long POEM that was repetitive unemotional.
The cinematography was NOT beautiful as was written, rather, it was dull & shot in many close-ups. Shooting a lot of close-ups is a trick of the trade if you do not have a large budget to shoot master shots.
I was very disappointed to say the least. I wanted to absorb this story and to be taken away by a specific aspect in early Japanese culture.
